The beloved action-adventure game Assassin’s Creed made its debut with the virtual reality (VR) based version Nexus. However, unfortunately, the game fell short of expectations and failed to generate the desired excitement. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated in his remarks on the matter that they would temporarily reduce their investment in virtual reality because there is still much more ground to cover in this area.
Assassin’s Creed VR falls short
Of course, changing people’s habits that they have had for years is quite challenging. Therefore, many Assassin’s Creed fans are not yet enthusiastic about the idea of VR. However, it can be said that the sales of the production were not as bad as initially thought.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus sold close to 250,000 copies, which put it well ahead of other virtual reality games sold on Steam. Considering that the VR user base is quite small, we can argue that these statistics are not too bad.
It is estimated that Ubisoft made approximately $6 million in revenue from official sales. While this revenue is quite high compared to many other productions, it is not sufficient for a large company like Ubisoft. Additionally, we know that the production process of virtual reality-based games is more challenging than traditional games.
Some in the industry argue that rather than big production companies, it should be specialized companies focusing solely on virtual reality that create such games. However, most of these companies do not have the budget to produce ambitious VR games that appeal to wide audiences.
We also remember that Sony released VR versions of its beloved console PlayStation. However, this device also sold significantly less than the standard PlayStation and therefore did not become as widespread as desired. Although things don’t look very promising for virtual reality-based game productions right now, only time will tell what the future holds.
